I rush home and take a quick, ten-minute shower, washing away the fried grease smell and washing my hair with the new black cherry, vanilla shampoo I ordered from a catalog. I do an extra scrubbing on my teeth and shave everything I can reach. I spray my hair with some natural wave mist, leaving my face fresh and makeup free. I pull on a pair of cutoffs and a tank top with some boots, hoping Daddy doesn’t ask where I’m going.

I check the time.

My tummy tickles with butterflies, and a boundless energy surges through my veins when I sneak out of the house without a problem, thanks to Momma asking Daddy to go to Ms. Bonnie’s.

I tiptoe out the backdoor and skirt the shed, slipping down by the lake.

That’s when I spot him standing down by the bank, leaning against a tall cypress tree.

I see it in his eyes when his gaze lands on me. He’s excited to see me, and even better, he’s happy with what he sees.

He smiles.

“Hey,” he starts. “You look great.”

“Thank you.” I try to ignore the butterflies, but I feel weird when he takes my hand in his. “Are you taking the boat?” I ask.

He nods as he helps me step inside. “We’re gonna go for a ride.”

My long, damp hair blows in the warm breeze, and it’s nights like this when the magic happens. My skin vibrates with electricity, and I burn with fresh excitement.

We don’t talk, just stealing glances as we maneuver our way through the coves, cutting it close until Kylo cuts off the engine, letting us float as the sun goes down. Shadows dance across the water, and the romantic setting is the perfect place for a date, and it has nothing to do with the fact that he can’t go out in public.

Kylo pulls out a picnic basket, and I recognize it as my mom’s. She must have helped him set up this date.

“Can I get you a drink?” He asks, prying open the seal on the Yeti cooler. “Here’s a Shiner.”

“Perfect.” I take a long guzzle.

“Let me show you what I brought.” He opens the double top of the wicker basket and pulls out a bowl. “Some brie with apricot preserves and sea salt water crackers. Here’s some prosciutto and gouda.” He beams, proud and dipping into the basket again “Chocolate-covered strawberries, ham and smoked cheddar croissants. And mini coconut cakes.”

“You brought all my favorite things.” My cheeks flush with heat.

“Gemma may have had something to do with that.”

“That’s okay. I can see how much you wanted to get it right.”

“Yeah, I don’t know anything about Brie. And don’t get me started on the difference between preserves and jelly.”

“You have to try it.” I swipe a salty cracker through the apricots and the soft cheese, popping it into his mouth.

He chews for a second before he rounds his gorgeous, dark eyes.

“You like it, don’t you?”

He nods, leaning in, and brushing his sweet, sticky lips across mine.

“How’d you find out you like food like this? It’s fancy.
